Boris Johnson takes on the role of Prime Minister for the United Kingdom at a time when our country faces unprecedented challenges.

Deep divisions around Theresa May’s Brexit bungle coming on top of years of austerity have damaged our country. As Prime Minister Boris Johnson must heal those wounds.

During his leadership campaign Johnson made bold claims about “recruiting an extra 20,000 police officers” and a pledge of “increased education funding”. These investments are much needed and Labour will hold him to account to deliver them.

He also claimed: “this incredible UK economy soars as it does like an eagle” partly due to its “fantastic public services”. Yet these are the very same services that have been so desperately underfunded. Children, the homeless, older people and those with disabilities in Northampton feel the pain.

If – or when – we crash out of the EU with no deal it will not be Boris Johnson who faces the backlash of a damaged economy or a loss of jobs. It will be people in Northampton and across the UK who rely on stable trade agreements with our global partners for secure jobs and businesses.

Johnson believes he will be able to negotiate trade deals with ease after taking us out of the EU with no deal and no plan going forward. But his track record as Foreign Secretary shows us that Foreign Affairs are not his strong suit. Just like the testimony of those who’ve worked with him shows how little he can be trusted.

It is more crucial than ever that we come together as a country to protect against damage to our economy, public services, jobs and infrastructure. Only Labour can deliver real change.
