Sally Keeble has called for the Prime Minister to stand down after the unanimous Supreme Court judgement ruled his shutdown of Parliament was unlawful.

“The Supreme Court ruling was devastating, and shows that Boris Johnson is unfit to take the decisions that affect all our futures. He tried to play fast and loose with our democracy and he’s been caught out. He should stand aside so that the country can move forward at this crucial time,” she said.

The 11 Supreme Court judges unanimously ruled that the advice the Prime Minister gave the Queen was unlawful, and the prorogation of Parliament was null and void. The order closing it down was “a blank piece of paper” the Supreme Court judges ruled.

The ruling immediately led to calls for the resignation of the Prime Minister, and Sally Keeble joined them.

“The Government has been shown to have put party political interests before the well-being of the country. The Government should be the upholder of democracy. It should not have tried to silence Parliament. That was a scandalous abuse of power. It’s a disgrace also for the Government’s law officers who have allowed this shameful breach of the law.”
